About Us

Shepherdstar Ragdolls is a small Ragdoll breeder in south Georgia near the Florida border and Tallahassee. We offer Ragdoll kittens for sale and are located in the small town of Thomasville, just 25 miles north of Tallahassee, Florida.

Our Ragdoll cattery is named after our Belgian Tervuren, Boncoeur's Alpha Shepherdstar. Alpha, our faithful companion and farmdog while we had a sheep farm in upstate New York, spent her senior years with us in northeastern North Carolina. It was quite a lifestyle change for her as it was for us, going from 78 acres in the country (where we raised sheep and angora rabbits) to one acre in a small town. After our 2 rescue cats brought in from New York died of old age, we acquired two Ragdoll cats and Alpha befriended them.  She died at the age of 15 and it seemed right to name the cattery in her memory.

Shepherdstar, "l'Etoile du Berger" in French, is Venus, the brightest object in the earthly skies. Ragdoll cats, with their otherworldly demeanor and their bright blue eyes, might well have come from the planet Venus ;-)

We have had registered purebred Ragdolls since 2006. We are a small cattery. Our cats are registered with TICA (The International Cat Association), the world's largest genetic registry of pedigreed cats.  If you contemplate purchasing a kitten from us, you can be assured that the kitten will have been socialized and well taken care of.

Your kitten will come to you at around 12 weeks of age; it will have been wormed and will have received all vaccinations appropriate for its age at placement. It will also have been spayed or neutered so you won't have to worry about having this done. If you are curious about early spaying/neutering, you may want to read the Winn Feline Foundation report on the subject.

Your kitten will be well-socialized

- used to children: our 2 younger daughters, 13 and 15, play with the cats and kittens and help with the feeding, watering, and cleaning chores. Snuggling up in bed with a favorite kitten is always a treat!

- used to dogs, large and small: our Newfoundland, Penelope*, who weighs about 100 lbs, was raised with our Ragdolls and our young 10-lb Havanese, Haiku, plays with the younger ones as if she were a kitten herself.

Your kitten will also have been litter box trained, and trained to use a scratching post since the age of 4 weeks.

You may want to read our contract and let us know if you have any questions.

Our breeding cats have been DNA tested and found negative for the HCM (Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy) mutation.

We are members of Ragdoll Fanciers Worldwide Club, Ragdoll International, and Ragdoll Fanciers Club International.
